This is one of Grace’s hymns and was written to accompany a sermon preached by Will White at a special service in their church in Banstead. To the tune of Cwm Rhondda (aka “Guide me O Thou great Jehovah”) Grace set the headlines of the sermon to music and the resulting hymn became an anthem of the church that was sung frequently in the years that followed.
His four points were
- seek the heavenly
- reject the earthly
- select the holy
- show the Godly
Here is her hymn
Christ is all, I bow before him
For I would new life receive;
I have wandered, failed and hurt him,
I repent and do believe
He’ll revive me
He’ll revive me
As I trust and yield to Him.
So I seek now what is heavenly,
Keep my eyes fixed on my Lord;
He is seated there is glory,
By His ransomed ones adored.
Seek the heavenly
Seek the heavenly
He’ll revive and quicken me.
I would cast away the earthly
Put to death those sins I know;
Claim the promises He’s given,
Trust His cleansing blood to flow.
Slay the earthly
Slay the earthly
He’ll revive and cleanse me too.
Lord, I must select the Holy
For you’ve chosen me to be
Clothed in pure and righteous garments
Fit for all the world to see.
Make me holy
Make me holy
He’ll revive and speak through me.
So I would show forth the Godly
In the strength which Christ can give;
Know his peace, His word indwelling,
Honour Him each day I live.
Show the Godly
Show the Godly
He’ll revive and use me too.
I would now give thanks O Father
For your love and for your Son
May my life show forth your glory
As the Spirit’s work is done.
Come revive me
Come revive me
Christ will then be all to me.
