This is typical of Grace. She would write a poem for just one person at a difficult time in their lives. This poem was written for her sister-in-law, Ethel, who had been diagnosed with a cancer from which she would not recover. Written as if in Ethel’s own voice, it provided great comfort to her as she slipped into heaven. Thereafter it remained modestly in a file until we found it after Grace passed away.

(The ‘Phil’ mentioned in the poem was Ethel’s husband)
I’m sure of you O gracious Lord
I’ve trusted you so long
I thank you that you’ve saved my soul
And I to you belong
I’m sure that You speak through your word
To help me in these days;
Your promises I hold most dear,
I’ll trust You and I’ll praise.
I’m sure I feel your presence Lord
Surrounding me each day;
I thank You that You’re here with me
Whatever comes my way.
I’m sure that you will give your strength,
Now that I feel so weak;
Please hold me in your loving arms
When everything seems bleak.
I’m sure You have a home for me,
Prepared in heaven above;
I thank You that I’ll be with You
And know your perfect love.
I’m sure that when you come for me
You’ll comfort my dear Phil;
Uphold him in a wondrous way,
As You unfold your will.
I’m sure that you will safely keep
my family in your care;
Please comfort them and bless them too –
this is my constant prayer.
I’m sure that You are saying Lord –
“The best is yet to be”,
And then that glorious day will dawn
Your blessed face I’ll see.
I’m sure that You will help me Lord
To bear the cross you’ve given,
And then I know that cross will turn
Into a crown in heaven.
And so, dear Lord, I rest in You,
“My times are in Your hand”;
The tears and pain will all be past
When in that “better land”.
